First Grade Information!
First Day
School will start on Thursday, September 7th. The bus pick-up and drop-off times should be the same as last year provided your child has the same residence. If you are requesting that your child be dropped off at another residence, please send in a bus note. The note will need your child’s first and last name, the name of the person’s home he or she will be going to and the address. Including this information will ensure that we place your child on the correct bus.
Supplies
A backpack is very important for carrying books and other items to and from school. The children will each have their own desk and will keep his or her pencil box, books, and other supplies in it. If you feel that your child would benefit from having an extra set of clothing, please feel free to send it to school in a labeled ziplock bag. If you would like to bring your child into the classroom to drop off their supplies prior to the first day of school, our rooms will be open on Tuesday, September 5th from 2:00 to 6:00.
Homework and Agenda Books
Homework provides children with the opportunity to practice skills taught in school and will be given regularly. Your child will be expected to return completed homework the next day. The students will receive an agenda book and will be taught to write their homework assignments in their agenda. Please check your child’s agenda books daily and write your initials to show your child has completed his or her homework. Homework assignments will vary and should not take your child longer than 10 – 15 minutes to complete. Nightly reading is highly encouraged and extremely important for first graders to develop their reading abilities. Your child will bring home an agenda book on the first day of school. The agenda books will be our main form of communication in regards to your child’s daily academic and social behavior.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and lunch are available to be purchased in the cafeteria each day. Please send breakfast and lunch money in a labeled envelope. All money will be sent to the cafeteria each morning. A menu will be sent home at the beginning of each month.
Snacks
We will be having a snack time every afternoon and are asking that each child provides snack for the class once or twice a month. A calendar will be sent home every month listing your child’s snack day. Healthy snacks such as fresh fruits and vegetables are encouraged. You are welcome to send in a special treat such as cupcakes or ice cream for your child’s birthday. Please be sure to communicate any allergies your child has.
Student Arrival
A routine has been established for all students arriving to school prior to 8:00 a.m. All students are asked to report to the cafeteria to be picked up by the classroom teachers. Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. may proceed to their assigned classroom. Please review this routine with your child.
Additional Information
Recess
Recess will take place on the playground as long as the weather permits. A jacket or sweatshirt may be needed.
Toys
Please leave all toys at home. We have an assortment of materials in the classroom that encourage the development of many concepts and skills. When toys come from home they are often misplaced, broken, and can detract from learning opportunities in the classroom.
Specials
Art, music, physical education, and library are the specials the first graders will participate in this year. You can find your child’s daily specials listed on the monthly snack calendar. Both first grade classes will be combined for physical education. Please be sure to pack sneakers for gym days.
