MIDDLE AGES WEBQUEST

6th Grade

INTRODUCTION

Alas, you have come to class as a 6th grader in Willsboro Central School , but upon entering your classroom, you discover that you are back in the Middle Ages!  You are now ruled by the Good Queen Valachovic and you have become her subjects.  Willsboro is now a fiefdom, and the school has become a castle.

Unfortunately, you do not know how to live in the kingdom of Willsboro , but you will have to learn fast.  You will need to find out what your place would be in a feudal society, where you would live, and how you would live.

TASK

Your task will be to learn as much as you can about living in the Middle Ages, and you will do that by picking a role to research.  You will need to create a How-To book that would be a guide to living in the Middle Ages.  The roles that you may pick from are:

Ruling Class:  King, Queen, Lord, Lady

            Warriors:  Knight, Crusader

            Clergy:  Pope, Monk/Nun, Rabbi

            Commoners:  Freeman, guild member (townsperson)

To demonstrate that you could live in the Middle Ages as your chosen person, you must write a “How-To” book that explains your daily life and routines. On the day that you present your book to Queen Valachovic to put in her library, you must dress up as your character and play your character for that day.  There will be a feast, of course, to celebrate you  will need to bring a dish that you would have eaten in the Middle Ages.

Queen Valachovic may have some questions for you about your book and your life, so that she will know how her subjects live in her kingdom.

PROCESS AND RESOURCES

After you have picked your role, and before you begin your research, brainstorm what you want or need to know about your character.  Some of the questions should be:

Clothing              What clothing would you have worn?  What was it made of?

Homes                What kinds of home would you have?  What was it made of?                                                    Where would it be located?  What was it called?  How many                                             rooms would it have?

Food                     What would you eat?  Who would make it?  How often would                                       you eat?  Where would it come from?

Daily Life            What would you do doing the day?  Where would you work?

Families               Who would you marry?  How many children would you have?

Entertainment    What would you do for fun?

Education             Would you go to school?  Where would you go to school?  How

long would you go to school?

You will have to use both books in the library and the websites that are in this webquest.  You may not use any other websites, unless they are approved by Queen Valachovic or Scribner Trienens.

You will need a title page and  a Works Cited page in your book listing all of the resources that you used, including a book, an encyclopedia, and a website.  Scribner Trienens will be able to help you.

BOOKS

All of these books will be available in your classroom so that you may use them at any time.  Remember to take notes as you read, and always make a note where you found the information.  Notecards will be in the front of each book.  You may take notes on those notecards. You will also have all of the information that you need for your Works Cited page.
