Mr.
Derrick A. Hopkins (Elementary Teacher)
is in his seventh year teaching at the elementary level at
Willsboro
Central
School
. Prior to WCS, he taught sixth, seventh, and eighth grade science
at
St. John’s
Academy
. Mr. Hopkins attended
Clinton
Community College
where he received an associated degree in Humanities and Social Sciences.
While there, he was active in the Drama Club, Student Senate
(Vice-President), Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (President), Student
Activities, and College President Student Advisory Board. He was
honored by being named to the USA-Today All Academic Team and was the
recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Mr.
Hopkins completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Elementary
Education from SUNY Plattsburgh. While there, he was active in the
music department, participating in Cardinal Singers, College Chorale,
Symphonic Band, Saxophone Ensemble, and studied private voice. In
his senior year, he was featured in the opera, Amahl
and the Night Visitors. Aside from teaching, Mr. Hopkins is
the advisor to the Drama Club, where musicals are his passion.
Outside of school, he has directed, performed, and/or assisted in over
forty theatrical productions. Some of his directorial credits
include South Pacific (starring
Broadway performers Leslie & George Hearn),
Company, The Wizard of Oz, The King and I, Cabaret, West Side Story,
Chicago, Into the Woods, and Grease
to name a few. Stage credits
include Horton the Elephant in Seussical,
a gangster in Kiss Me Kate, and
Mary Sunshine in
Chicago
. One of his greatest honors came in November of 2006 when he was
invited to participate in a workshop reading of The
Princess Bride, which earned him acceptance into Actors’ Equity,
the union for professional actors.
