Business Department Course Descriptions

BUSINESS COMPUTER APPLICATIONS* (1/2 UNIT)

This course is a "hands on" class intended to guide students through their experience involving the use of business software. Upon completion, the student will have an understanding of computer hardware, software, data base concepts, and the use of spreadsheets. Usually proceeded by Business Analysis.

GRADE LEVEL: 10-11-12

PREREQUISITES: Keyboarding I


BUSINESS ANALYSIS (1/2 UNIT)

Business Analysis offers a broad overview of modern business organization and operation. Students examine how businesses are organized to provide a product, a service, and idea, or a combination of these, and acquainted with activities commonly utilized by most businesses to enable them to meet customers' needs and demands. In addition students will be introduced to many business occupations to explore career opportunities. Usually follows Business Data Analysis.

GRADE LEVEL: 10-11-12

 PREREQUISITES: Business Computer Applications


KEYBOARDING I (1/4 UNIT)

Keyboarding is designed to develop touch keyboarding skills to the extent that students may use the skill in their personal lives or as a supporting skill in their jobs. A review of language rules governing use of punctuation, plurals, and sentence structure is included.

GRADE LEVEL: 7-8-9-10

PREREQUISITES: None.


WORD PROCESSING* (1/2 UNIT)

This course is designed to use the computer as a writing tool. Programs on the computer will be used to type documents quickly and easily, edit mistakes, and make other necessary changes. Students will learn specific features of the computer that will allow them to delete, move or copy blocks of tests within documents, replace old information with new information. The student will learn to specify the exact layout of a document: including margins, paging, underlining, boldface, etc. Training in productions application provides the student the opportunity to learn how to arrange and key business and personal letters, memorandums, tabulations, and reports.

 GRADE LEVEL: 9-10-11-12

 PREREQUISITES: Keyboarding I


ACCOUNTING (1 UNIT)

 This course is designed to develop competence in the application of accounting theory. Students will process transactions through the entire accounting cycle in a service and merchandising business. Successful completion will provide occupational competencies in bookkeeping.

 GRADE LEVEL: 11-12

 PREREQUISITE: None


BUSINESS LAW (1 UNIT)

 The purpose of this course is to help students develop an under-standing and appreciation of business and consumer law and how it affects them in every day life. Units include: Sources of Laws and the Court System, Entering Contracts, Obtaining a Job, Being a Consumer, and Starting a Business.

 GRADE LEVEL: 10-11-12

 PREREQUISITE: None


DESKTOP PUBLISHING* (1 UNIT)

This course is designed to develop both technical and nontechnical office and information skills. Opportunities are provided for the further development of word processing skills, and for the initiation and processing of text and data electronically. Also included will be units on telecommunications, desktop publishing, scanning, CD-ROM, digital imaging, advanced graphics, and presentations.

 GRADE LEVEL: 10-11-12

 PREREQUISITE: Word Processing and/or Business Computer Applications


MARKETING (1 UNIT)

Principles of Marketing will introduce students to the important part that marketing plays in our economic system. They will have the opportunity to explore past and current trends and innovations influencing the marketing system and speculate on future trends related to their career goals. Students will then proceed to a more in-depth study of various subsystems of marketing, such as marketing research, promotion, personal selling, pricing, distribution, and retail operations.

 GRADE LEVEL: 10-11-12

 PREREQUISITE: None
